It is that time of year in the great city of Louisville: St. James Court Art Show!  St. James is an annual art show that occurs the first weekend in October in the Old Louisville neighborhood (between downtown and the University of Louisville). It is one of the largest art shows in the United States. Thus, it seems fitting that we feature our St. James Court Art Show Strata from JLL’s newest cookbook, Bluegrass Gatherings.
This recipe is featured in the brunch section of the St. James Court Art Show chapter of the cookbook.


5 large plum tomatoes

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 (1-pound) loaf Italian bread, trimmed and cut into 1/2 inch-thick slices

4 ounces herbed goat cheese, softened

1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded white cheddar cheese

8 eggs

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/3 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1 tablespoon chopped basil

Serves 12

Cut tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices and remove the seeds. Arrange in a large colander and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt. Let drain for 30 minutes. Remove the tomato slices to paper towels and pat dry.

Arrange half bread slices in the bottom of a greased 9x13inch baking dish (We recommend considering using some of Louisville Stoneware’s fine bake ware. ) Spread the bread with half the goat cheese and sprinkle with half the cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers and arrange the tomato slices over the top.

Whisk the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon salt and the pepper in a bowl. Pour evenly over the bread mixture. Chill, covered, overnight. Remove the strate from the refrigerator and let stand for 30 minutes.

Bake, uncovered, in a preheated 350-degree oven for 60-70 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let stand for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with the basil and serve.
